Combining the formal rigor of Hard-edge painting, the comic book Surrealism of the Chicago Imagists, and Pop Art’s repurposing of commercial product design with a fascination for occult symbolism, Matthew Langland’s paintings explore abstraction’s potential to bypass shared assumptions of images and offer thoroughly unique experiences instead.

Originally from Chicago, Langland earned an MFA from UT Austin in 2001. He lived in Brooklyn for 15 years and returned to Austin in 2016. He has exhibited work in New York, Austin, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
